What is a Ganglion
Cyst
A ganglion cyst is a soft tissue tumor that can be
found anywhere in the body. Ganglions are typically found on the surface of a
tendon. They are most commonly observed in either the hand or the top of the
foot. This type of tumor is the histological hypertrophic formation of
extra-tendonous tissue. This tumor is most often benign. It is usually a
well-visualized mass found just below the skin. The mass is usually soft in
nature and movable. They can either be painful or asymptomatic. These often give
runners a problem with “rubbing” at the top
of the shoe.
At times, ganglions self-resolve. Treatment includes aspiration, injection of
a steroid, or surgical excision. If surgical excision is needed, recovery is
rather trouble-free. Of course, with any tumor, definitive diagnosis can only be
made through biopsy. You and your physician will determine which treatment is
best for you.
